Coastal Banksia crown / bangle

by Ewan Tremellen 2021

Cast bronze, Sterling Silver.

After spending most of my adult life in the city we decided it was time for a change and moved to a rural property outside of Melbourne. I’d grown up on a farm but city life with all its conveniences had become the norm and now returning after all those years reintroduced me to the beautiful native flowers I’d grown up surrounded by.

Our new walking tracks are lined with towering gums, floral sprays of wattle and the captivating coastal banksias. With their incongruous flowers, sawtooth leaves and ‘bad banksia men’ pods, I decided to make two pieces for Scale Up centred around the banksia, a sculpture/display and a bangle.

The ‘Coastal Banksia Crown’ is designed as both a stand-alone centrepiece and a way of displaying the sculptural nature of the flowers and pods. With elbows of bronze incorporated into the crown, each of the banksias can rest in a way that heightens their charm. Twigs woven together and cast in bronze form the base of the ‘Coastal Banksia Crown’ with five evenly spaced ‘sprays’ ready to cradle their stems.

The ‘Coastal Banksia Bangle’ is a paired back tribute to the species. In a repeated motif from the crown, Sterling Silver sections of branch are linked together into a gently articulated bracelet, with naturally occurring knots of the original branch, forming the hinges.
